Note Semantic Database Analysis

You can optionally carry out a further check on the Ntds.dit database by performing a semantic database analysis. This analyzes data with respect to Active Directory semantics—similar to checking a program file for syntax errors. To carry out this check directly after you have checked integrity, type quit to exit from the file maintenance prompt. At this point, the AD DS database is still stopped, and the activate instance is set to ntds. Enter semantic database analysis, followed by go fixup. When the analysis completes, enter quit twice to exit from the ntdsutil utility.

17. If the integrity check fails, copy the original Ntds.dit file in C:\OriginalNTDS back to the ntds folder and repeat the procedure . Otherwise, continue to the next step .

18. In Server Manager, expand the Configuration node and select Services .

19. Locate and right-click the Active Directory Domain Services service, and then select Start

Your Boston domain controller should now be fully operational. You can delete the Ntds.dit file located in the C:\OriginalNTDS folder because it is no longer valid. If, however, you encounter errors, do not delete the original Ntds.dit file but instead stop AD DS, restore the original Ntds.dit file, and restart AD DS .

Do not demote the Boston domain controller at this stage. You will be exploring authoritative restore and restartable AD DS in the Suggested Practices section at the end of this chapter
